The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga Theoretical Perspectives Discussion

Question Description

I’m working on a criminal justice discussion question and need an explanation and answer to help me learn.

In this week’s assigned readings you were introduced to three theoretical perspective (classical, positivist, and critical theories). What are the major arguments, or key points of each perspective? What are the strengths and weaknesses of each? AND, in Bob Dylan’s 1983 song ‘Sweetheart Like You‘, he explained that you,”[s]teal a little and they throw you in jail; steal a lot and they make you king”. According to the text ,”the criminal law’s controlling of the offenses of the poor rather than the offenses of the rich appears to reflect the legitimacy of an agreed-on definition of ‘dangerous’ crime and typical criminals (p. 47).” Do you agree with Bob’s statement and the textbook’s portrayal that powerful groups in society (i.e., large corporations and wealthy individuals) lobby lawmakers to ensure that harmful behavior of the powerful (i.e., crime in the suites) is minimally criminalized, while crimes committed by the poor (i.e., crime in the streets) are maximally criminalized? Explain and be sure to provide examples?
